" Is that a gourd?"
When people first look at the masks I create, the gourd itself is not what stands out. It is upon longer inspection that this question will present itself.
A gourd is magical, like a fingerprint, or a snowflake, each unique. From the vine to the mask, each gourds personality is born and develops.
My experience as an artist was in music and photography until a dear friend introduced me to gourds and the possibilities within them and within myself. That was in early 2001 and I slowly began experimenting until later that summer when my creative energy took over and I became obsessed with unveiling these masks within the gourds.
After the process of cleaning and cutting the gourd, I use primarily leather dyes, wood stains, shoe polish, and acrylic paints to enhance the gourds natural beauty. Various gourds call for pyrography, inlays, beadwork, and the adornment of feathers, horsehair, and or precious metals.
I dont doubt that living in the southwest has influenced a large part of my style, but I never consciously try to duplicate a Native American design out of respect for a culture that I am not a part of. The beauty of the environment in which I live is also incorporated into my masks with items found in our desert including devils claws, feathers, bones, antlers, cactus spines, as well as driftwood.
I am completely satisfied to look at a gourd with the wonder and awe of a child, being astonished at the mask that was there all alongwaiting to be introduced.
